A Critique of Samuel L. Jackson

Summary
This will definitely give you chills!  Some of the best acting and speaking of our time comes from this epic scene in Quentin Tarantino’s famed movie Pulp Fiction.

Content

Seeing as this is a Bible verse, it is powerful from the start.  There is really no room for critique about the content, since, well…it’s the Bible!

Design

Just another classic movie clip. No design to be critiqued here.

Delivery

It’s all about the delivery in this speech.  Samuel L. Jackson actually makes you wet your pants when he gives this speech!!  I mean, the man has a powerful enough voice on its own, but then he’s holding a gun, you’ve totally screwed over his boss, and he’s already shot you in the shoulder.  You know what’s coming next can’t be good!

As far as delivery methods go, I thought I would lay them out for you:

Opening:  Strong.  A rhetorical opening always gets the attention of the audience.

“You read the Bible, Greg?”

Body:  Jackson maintained passion throughout his talk.  He also used props.  Check out the nice gun he is holding.

Closing:  Moving….as in holy crap he’s gonna waste that guy!

“And you will know my name is the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon you.”

On a side-note, ending a speech by killing your audience members doesn’t warrant repeat viewers.

All in all, another great performance by Samuel L. Jackson.  Well done!
