Transform Your Presentations – Advice from The Incredible Hulk

Depending on whether you are more familiar with the comic book, the cartoon, the TV show or either of the two films, you may have different impressions of a large green goon called The Incredible Hulk. However, as reasonable adults, I think we can agree on a few points: A Dr. Banner was overexposed to gamma rays, and now he has trouble holding his temper.

The Hulk is one of the most recognizable comic characters of all time. He is giant and green, but he is also fallible to his own anger and rage. His emotions get the best of him and he often times hurts those he loves most when his blood begins to boil – and his biceps begin to bulge.

Although he’s not the most sophisticated hero in the Marvel Universe, the green one is a deep character in many ways. He is even a great example to look to when preparing to present.

Here are four ways to make your next PowerPoint presentation Incredible!

Stay Calm

Whether you are the unfortunate victim of a gamma radiation overdose or just a guy trying to pull off a great presentation, the rule is the same: Chill out! Things are going to go wrong. Outlets aren’t going to work. You will forget your extra batteries on the day when your batteries finally die. Yes. Your fonts are beautiful – and unfathomably tiny. Here’s an idea: live, learn and laugh. You can’t prepare for every factor that will mess with your perfect presentation. That’s why should always be preparing to present the imperfect one. Trust me, throwing the lectern through the wall will solve nothing.

Find Something to Care About

In the television version of the story, Dr. David Banner attempts to tap into his reserves of super-human strength after he is unable to save his fiancée from a fiery car crash. Of course things go terribly wrong and he is left with a chartreuse alter-ego instead of a charming, sexy bride.

Them’s the breaks!

However, we can take a lesson from the good Dr.: Love is a powerful motivator. Although you may not dedicate your next presentation to the girl in the next cubicle, it is a great strategy to attach yourself to your projects in a deep way. Perhaps you are going to find a story to tell that you can really get carried away with. Maybe you can “fall in love” with some new gadget that allows you to make the best slides you’ve ever made. Why not go head-over-heels for social networking possibilities and market your presentations online like never before? C’mon, throw caution to the wind!

Don’t Over Do It

Clearly, the Hulk’s trademark is approaching every situation with an over-the-top attitude. Obviously, this won’t always make for great presentations. Generally speaking, less is more. So don’t Hulk it out on your next presentation. You can push your message on your audience, but don’t push them through the window in the process.

Hidden Strength

Do you have hidden strengths inside of you? Of course! We all do! Maybe you’re hilarious. Maybe you’re great at organizing. Perhaps you were always the “artsy” kid in class. A great presentation requires a variety of talents and abilities. Tap into your own particular strengths to make your presentations great – and uniquely your own.
