Pop culture. Funny. Memorable.
These are the words that describe the work of Family Guy’s creator Seth McFarlane. Over the past 9 years, Seth has mastered the art of storytelling using pop culture flashbacks – a technique that really works with people like me. I love and appreciate the many references to Star Wars, Thundercats, Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe, Ferris Bueller, and all the other hundreds of 70’s and 80’s pop culture flashbacks. It’s what makes the show unique, humorous, and most importantly – fun! In addition, Family Guy has also managed to revitalize the entire genre of cartoons earning spoofs from other popular programs like The Simpsons and South Park.
Presentations need this type of storytelling. They need pop culture since that is what resonates with Gen X and Gen Y. We have such a rich array of media that people have grown up on and continue to devour. Why not use it to convey a message? That’s the genius of Seth McFarlane.
All in all, a presentation without a pop culture reference is dry and boring. Mention a fact and I may remember it. Mention Princess Leia, Han Solo, or Webster and I’ll put it in my heart forever.
