Last weekend I had the privilege to join a friend to drive up to Indianapolis to enjoy the 93rd running of the Indy 500. We were so enthused in the days leading up to the event that we even created a social networking site to help create community around race day and the rest of the season’s races. It was a day full of compelling racing, great food, and 300,000 raving fans. It was like nothing I have ever experienced before. Plus, watching 33 cars reach speeds as high as 220 miles per hour was one that I will not soon forget.
Below are three observations I pulled from this spectacular event.
Life Begins at 200mph
If you want to compete with the best presenters then raise the ante. Go farther. Go faster. Do it better.
Wins are Everywhere
One of the most exciting elements of the day was Danica Patrick’s 3rd place finish. Granted, she didn’t take the first place prize, but her performance was a tiny win for the record books. I have seen her race a few times and that girl can drive. This was her best performance yet in the Indy 500 and it was a win within itself. The same is true for every presentation. You may not always deliver a presentation of epic proportions, but you can find the little wins in every public speaking opportunity.
Become a Legend
There is no other sporting event like the Indy 500. It attracts over 300,000 spectators, has a diverse selection of traditions (Winners Drink Milk), and has been around close to 100 years. It’s an event that has become one of the greatest spectacles in racing. If you want to be a legendary presenter then establish your own traditions, your own unique style, and become great at being you.
