A Review of the Keyspan Presentation Remote Pro

What’s Hot.
With volume control, two methods of slide navigation and several other capabilities, this remote serves just about every purpose. Hide-away compartment for USB receiver is an added bonus.

What’s Not.
Mouse control function proves a little tricky at times.

The bottom line.
Although the price might seem high, this remote will allow you to control practically everything in your presentation from 100 feet away.

The remote: is there a better (or easier) way to convince audiences that you are a presentation pro? Maybe, but I haven’t found it yet. The remote control is much like a presentation security blanket – a few deft maneuvers will offset a shaky voice in a matter of seconds.

The Keyspan Presentaion Remote Pro is a simple plug-and-play device that communicates with your computer through a USB receiver that the remote itself handily stores when not in use. The remote includes a nice variety of features that allows you to control your presentation from just about anywhere in the room.

To begin, the remote includes a Mouse Control button that moves the mouse cursor. The Left and Right Mouse buttons, as you might have guessed, control the left and right mouse button functions. The remote also features Next and Previous Slide buttons that control your presentation navigation. The Laser button activates a red laser pointer, a feature that, when used wisely, adds an authoritative air to even the most tenuous argument.

If you prefer to dazzle your listeners with sound, both PC and Mac (OS X 10.3 or later) users can use the Volume Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume of a presentation’s audio effects. Finally, if your slide is just so visually stimulating that your audience has forgotten you exist, you can make them turn their attention back to you by darkening the slide with the push of the Black Screen button.

Two controls are located on the side of the remote. The Composite Switch is a wheel that will allow you to move more quickly through your slides (sliding the wheel up will move the presentation back to the previous slide and down will move it on to the next slide). The Left Mouse button performs the same function as the Left Mouse button on the remote face.

The Keyspan remote is easy to hold and control. It’s also light, so carrying it with you to a meeting is a non-issue. Getting started is a cinch. Just pop the USB receiver into your computer and press two buttons on the remote until its lights flash. That’s it – you’re ready to go. If public speaking really isn’t your thing in the slightest, the Keyspan remote works up to 100 feet, making hiding in the back of the room a viable option. The only issue raised with this remote is the difficulty in using the Mouse Control button effectively. Slowing down the remote speed seems to help with this problem. However, if total mouse control is something you will die without, you might want to look into a few other options first.
