Ethos3 recently had a chat with our friend, Jake Greene, author of Whoa, My Boss Is Naked! A Career Book for People Who Would Never Be Caught Dead Reading a Career Book. You can read our discussion below.
1. What was the inspiration for writing your book, Whoa, My Boss is Naked!?
I wanted to write a career book that was entertaining and would appeal to the members of the Pop Culture generation, many of whom have high hopes but low attention spans. I felt like most business books on the shelf could be classified as “Corporate Tools for Corporate Tools.”
2. On that same note, that is an interesting name for a book. What made you think of that as a title?
Book titles are like band names because you generally go through several before you find one that sticks. Whoa, My Boss is Naked is actually the title of one of the chapters.
3. You recently dedicated a blog post to discussing networking and name-dropping. You made a very powerful statement. Will you please share that with our readers?
In the post I said that networking was important and that name-dropping for the purpose of looking important-by-association was obnoxious.
4. I know your business focuses heavily on Gen Y, what do you think is one of the key differences for relating to this generation versus Gen X?
Gen Y is the first generation that grew up online. That is the basis for several differences relating to communication styles, multi-tasking, networking, etc.
5. With everyone pursuing Bachelor’s degrees these days, how important do you feel it is for Gen Y students to pursue an M.B.A. or other higher degree?
Depends on the person.
6. Sometimes the Gen X and Gen Y workforce gets a bad wrap, do you feel the naysayers’ points are valid?
For the most part, no. However, there are major generational differences which naturally breed stereotyping.
7. So Jake, you have started a company, written a book, what’s next for you?
