America’s Best Dance Crew, the popular MTV television series just wrapped up it’s third season just a few week ago. If you are not familiar with the competition, MTV invited the best dance crews around the country to compete every Thursday night for a total of 8 weeks to earn top honors of being America’s best dance crew. Each week voters would call in to vote for their favorites.
The clear leader throughout Season One was a dance crew from San Diego, CA called the Jabbawockeez. No other crew came close to their style, originality, or level of innovation.
Dancing? MTV? Presentations? What can we learn from the Jabbawockeez? Surprisingly, we can learn plenty.
Here are several items to note:
Branded
The Jabbawockeez were the only crew that clearly branded themselves. Their white masks are now a pop culture hit.
Presentation Lesson: Brand yourself and your presentation. This is what keeps great presentations epic and memorable.
Showmanship
Class. Style. Team. They were more than a crew. They behaved like a family throughout the entire competition.
Presentation Lesson: Ethos. Be a person of a character, and always build and maintain your credibility.
Consistency
Each week they "brought it."
Presentation Lesson: You can’t start strong and end weak or vice versa. You need to always be consistent.
There to Win
According to the judges, they were always "fierce" and "blazin."
Presentation Lesson: You need to bring it as well. Always put your best foot forward and never tire.
Innovation, Not Imitation
If you get a moment, be sure to check out their performances. Each one is unique and innovative. In fact, they have a Michael Jackson tribute that is purely MJ inspired, but not copied. It’s a sample of pure innovation.
Presentation Lesson: Be original. Take inspiration from others, but don’t imitate.
