Summary
I wanted to take this time to honor one of America’s most recent heroes, Michael Phelps. The Olympic all-star has been plastered all over the media lately as the greatest Olympic athlete in history. This is a critique on a press conference that was held after Phelps brought home his 8th gold medal.
Content
This talk is short, sweet, and to the point. The experiences Phelps talked about were honest and seemed to come from the heart.
“It was fun.”
“I’m thankful that everything turned out pretty much perfect.”
“Every moment that I’ve had so far, in and out of the pool, will be with me forever.”
“I’m happy.”
You just can’t get more simple than that.

Delivery
So this is where Phelps loses points with me on the speech. Uh…um…uh…ummm. Seriously, he had to have had some idea he would be interviewed during the Olympics, so why not prepare? Don’t get me wrong, I know he had other things going on, but when you are this renowned, you must express some level of clarity when you speak.
Some times during the speech I couldn’t tell if he was talking or just moving his mouth around with random sounds coming out. A E I O U, and sometimes Y.
Finally, as far as gestures, did anyone notice “the pick?” Check it out around 36 seconds into the speech.
Note to future presenters: Don’t pick your nose while speaking!
All in all, I’m a big fan of Phelps. He seems very genuine, and he accomplished a great feat for the United States.
Thanks Michael!
That’s a wrap,
