They're Just Not That Into You

Everything was perfect! You’re cheesy pick-up line actually worked. You didn’t spill your red wine on her white blouse. She gave you her real number. You managed to put together a creative, fun plan for your first date. You found it in your power to be witty, provocative, mysterious, funny and romantic for an entire evening – and you even got the kiss at the door.

But now, she won’t return your calls…

What happened?

Sorry pal, she’s just not that into you.

Sometimes when we are caught up in the excitement of a new relationship, we get ahead of ourselves – or, more precisely – we get so into our own experience of the situation that we miss the actual signals that are coming from our would-be partner in crime.

We’ve all found ourselves in great situations – with potential and momentum – only to find that they run aground while we are busy patting ourselves on the back.

This same self-sabotage can ruin a great presentation.

Leggo Your Ego

When you were a kid, your brother or sister would probably chomp through the toaster waffles with such cold-blooded determination that there were seldom any left for you. Good times. They weren’t being evil, but they were being inconsiderate. When you are making a presentation its important to be connected, passionate and energetic – but with perspective. Your presentation isn’t about you, it’s about your presentation.

Find Contentment In Your Content

One of the best ways to avoid the pitfalls of the ego-trap is to keep your focus on the great content you are creating. Don’t get hung up on the attention or the accolades you may receive for your great work. Do the great work, hit a home run, and bask in the glory after the Q & A.

Genuine Authenticity

Whether or not you care for Barack Obama’s policies, few would deny that the man is a master speaker. One of his best qualities is the sincerity he exudes. This is especially apparent when he speaks off-the-cuff with citizens, answering hard questions with little-to-no preparation. He makes it look easy because he actually means what he is saying. Keep it real, and you’re audience will really hear your message.

At Their Service

One of the most important things to keep in mind when doing your PowerPoint presentation is that you are there to serve your audience. The last thing you want to do is turn the situation into a self-congratulatory ME-FEST. Even if you have a sterling reputation and an audience that is willing to hang on your every word – DON’T FALL FOR IT! In this case, it’s even more important to be humble and giving.

They’ll love you lots if you do.
