It’s a lot of work just getting a great presentation together – let alone being called upon to actually stand up and do it! When you are asked to appear at a distant conference or meeting to make a presentation, the logistics of travel only add to your headaches.
Hey, you’ve got enough to worry about! Refer to these simple tips and add a few of your own. Run through this list every time you head out on the road to insure that you’ve got your bases covered!
Stay in Touch
When on the road it’s smart to keep all of your pertinent names, numbers, addresses (real and email), Google maps, and schedules together in a folder. Essentially you want to keep your entire trip – literally – right at your finger tips. It might even be beneficial to add a few blank sheets just in case you need to make new notes etc. Keep the folder secured with the pen you’ll inevitably be fumbling for at the worst possible moment. Your incredible presentation won’t make much of an impression if you are lost in a cornfield during your scheduled appearance.
Keep it Clean
Hygiene can be a challenge when we travel. This is particularly tricky for presenters as our look is part of our first impression. You should consider leaving a new – unwrapped – shirt, toothbrush and toothpaste, along with a lint brush and instant shoe shine rub in my suitcase at all times. Also, some kind of facial wipe and fresh socks can make all the difference in a pinch. When things get gross, you can still look great!
Power Up
Never leave for a presentation without all the proper chargers, cords, and extra batteries you will need to make your machines work. This includes your cell phone, your laptop, your projector and any other gear you’ll need to make your presentation go. Make sure you have extras of each! Plus, make sure you have copies of your presentation on your machine, on discs, even on your iPod. Also, invest in properly padded packs and bags for your gear. You can never account for every snafu, but you can try!
The Road to Wellness
One of the hazards on the road is the toll it can take on your body. The last thing you need is a cold or a flu, in the middle of nowhere, on your way to a presentation. Buy plenty of healthy snacks before you head out. This will help you to avoid junk food at the gas station. Also, make sure you take advantage of any fitness facilities your hotel may offer. Even a brisk walk in the morning can keep your energy up and your immune system strong! In addition, focus on getting plenty of rest. Travel is an all-around stress-maker. Even if you “don’t feel tired”, your body needs a break.
