The Father of Economics and Capitalism, Adam Smith, is recognized academically as the author of The Wealth of Nations. In the written work, he discusses the art of increasing personal return on investments. But one of Smith’s earlier published materials, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, advanced a more ethical and giving agenda. According to the man who designed gross domestic product (GDP), compassion is an integral piece of effective communication between humans. When two people are immersed in a conversation, one party relinquishes personal details or valuable information in the hopes that the other party will respond similarly. There is a strong force at work here and it’s called gratitude. After we receive something from another person – whether it’s data, stories, or tips – we feel compelled to give something in return. All of the generosity creates a positive sensation among the individuals involved.
A unique set of presentation skills is required to manufacture positive audience experiences. Presenters must venture beyond the usual concluding ‘Thank You’ slide. If you want to foster goodwill between yourself and your listeners, try the following creative techniques.
Reveal social support
Incorporate visuals or quotes from customers and clients who display their support on social media. Demonstrating their satisfaction and loyalty to your brand or organization is like social proof on steroids. Not only are you able to convey appreciation for the fans you have to your presentation audience, but you’ll also create a “me too” effect among members of the crowd. You’ll inspire them to think, “wow, these people enjoy this product/service, maybe I will too.” One of the most authentic ways to create a positive experience for your audiences is to share the positive experiences current customers are having with you.
Include successful customers/clients
Recently, I attended a Hubspot event in Nashville. What I found fascinating and completely genius about the structure of the agenda was the inclusion of local customers on a panel during the Q&A session at the end of the day. Taking the initiative to locate your high performing or fiercely loyal customers and clients, inviting them to discuss their achievements, and rewarding them for doing so communicates to viewers that your company is invested in the entire process. You care more about the sale. You stay tuned through success.
Feature a networking opportunity
Of all the presentation skills a person could exhibit, the ability to reflect genuine interest in the affairs of others is the most impressive. Before you leave the venue, offer an opportunity for audience members to talk about issues, ideas, and solutions with you. Pass out your business card. Steer people towards a reference page on your website. Come prepared with branded templates to guide users through your philosophy or principles.
When it’s all said and done, creating positive experiences with gratitude involves showcasing your product or service through the lens of the customer or client experience.
