Lately, it seems like technology is evolving faster than ever. Maybe developers have extra time due to COVID lockdowns? Regardless of why this is happening, it can certainly feel impossible to keep up. Thankfully, we’ve developed some strategies on how to stay current with emerging technology. If you find yourself constantly wondering how everyone else knows something you don’t, try these three strategies and see if they help you feel more in the loop.
Rising generations have an edge
Face it, each generation below you likely knows a bit more about what is on the cutting edge than the generation that preceded them. This is simply due to their proximity to innovation. Younger generations have watched technology change in an instant their entire lives. So, naturally, they are constantly seeking the “next best thing”. Emerging technology is on their radar because they’ve come to expect bigger and better options at every turn.
We encourage you to find the youngest person in your workplace and talk to them about which apps they have and use on their phone most often. Find out where they turn for thought leadership and what they hope to see change or grow moving forward. Old school train-of-thought is to sit by and wait for current programs to catch up. Go against the grain! Try out the apps or programs that younger generations suggest. They may already be solving the problems you face.
Broaden your horizons
Get outside of your comfort zone. Face it: if you’re falling behind, it’s likely because your department or industry may not be invested in emerging tech. Is there an industry or company you look up to that is constantly innovating? Spend time with friends or mentors in those industries. See if you can pick their brains as to what they watch for and how they get inspired. If someone is doing it right, it’s worth finding out what makes them tick. Next, see if you can replicate what they’re doing in your own industry.
Take some time for TED
TED talks can be a great way to understand how others are using emerging tech. Thought leaders from many different industries are preparing talks in TED’s simple, short format. Watching talks about chemistry, invention, engineering, and science can give you some great insight. Being intentional about the leaders you follow starts with putting them on your radar. TED recommends offers personalized guidance, helping you find the most relevant talks for your individual circumstances. Carve out 10-20 minutes per day gaining inspiration by simply becoming aware of the innovation that surrounds you.
While staying on top of emerging technologies can seem daunting, if you’re doing it right, it doesn’t have to be time-consuming. Spending a few minutes acquainting yourself with those who do have hours to spend understanding the new direction of technology should prove invaluable.
