A Review of the Targus Wireless Presenter

What’s Hot.
Features basic functions in a simple layout that is easy to use, even in the dark.

What’s Not.
Weak laser and limited battery life (if the remote remains on) make the Targus somewhat unrelaible.

The bottom line.
The Targus Wireless Presenter is a no-frills remote that delivers straightforward features, but incorporates some design flaws as well.

The Targus Wireless Presenter is a very basic tool that is good for anyone with a fear of complicated technology. With its four red buttons, it reminds me of that old game, Simon Says. Although, anyone with a fear of technology now probably experienced Simon Says-induced stress episodes back in the day, so I’m not sure my visual analogy helped there.

The Targus Presenter includes 6 basic functions: Page up, Page down, Exit slide show, Darken screen, Resume screen and Laser pointer. It also features an on/off switch, which I only mention because if you forget to turn the Presenter off, you’ll run through AAA batteries faster than frat boys run through cheap beer.

The Presenter’s 30-foot range will cover most conference rooms, and its plug-and-play capability allows you to use the Presenter right out of the box without installing any software. Unlike other remotes on the market, though, the Targus doesn’t feature a hide-away space for its tiny USB connector. In the words of Elizabeth Bishop, “the art of losing things isn’t hard to master.” I’m just saying I can’t be trusted to keep up with something that small if it doesn’t come with a designated home.

Those looking for a strong laser pointer (my favorite part of any presentation remote) will need to look elsewhere. The Targus has a weak laser that is small and faint, even in close range. Although the Targus is relatively small and unnoticeable in your hand, the buttons produce a loud click, which might bother some users.

The Targus, while priced well, is not the most reliable remote on the market, considering its battery issues and potentially unperceivable laser. Although, if you really loved that Simon Says, you might just become fond of this remote after all.
