Be a Style Icon

We’ve all heard that each of us only has one chance to make a first impression. This is true when whether we are going to a job interview or introducing ourselves to the pretty girl at the cocktail party. It’s especially true when we presume to take the stage, stand at the podium and command the attention of a room full of our professional peers.

Like it or not, a big part of making a great first impression is looking sharp! For us guys this can be especially challenging. While many of our female counterparts have been following fashion trends since they were teens, most of us don’t have a clue when it comes to looking our best.

The good news is, the fashion maze is a much simpler puzzle for us guys. Trends don’t change as quickly, standards are reliable, and it can be easier to bring our own identity to our fashion statements than it is for the ladies.

With just a basic understanding of the fashion landscape, any guy can look his best. However, before we start picking out our best duds, it’s important to remember that looking good starts with YOU.

High Class Hygiene

You probably bathe regularly and don’t repulse the average person with the odors or textures of your skin and hair. However, the best looking guy in the room will be the one who takes it one step further. Keep your hair nicely trimmed or slicked back if you want to wear it longer. Wash your face with warm water only and use a moisturizer to keep smooth after shaving. If you wear a beard, keep it managed. Consider a manicure.

What’s Your Color

A few minutes in a mall, talking to a knowledgeable sales person should tell you a lot about the colors that bring out your skin tone, eye and hair colors. Find one that works and work it. Use it as an accent. Use it as the main color in a certain outfit. Find a way to keep it in your scheme all the time.

Dos and Don’ts

Try to match your belts, shoes, bags, watch bands etc. Keep these simple and well cared for. Never wear polyester ties. Silk only! Never wear polyester suits or jackets. Natural fabrics are readily available at affordable prices. Think wools for most of the year, linens when it’s hot. Generally, single pleated, flat-front pants fit best. Wear formal, lace-up shoes. Keep your wallet in your jacket, not bulging from your hip pocket. If you wear a cologne, keep it subtle.

Shop With a Woman

When I was in college, a friend’s girlfriend wanted to carpool with me to the mall. I was in the market for an autumn jacket. She picked up her eyeglass frames and met me at my store. What followed was an eye-opening experience. By the time we were done, I tried on about a dozen different styles. If it wasn’t for her, I never would’ve picked the one I did. It was stylish, affordable, and a classic I am still wearing – and getting compliments on. It never hurts to consult and expert!
