Term #28: Evisceration Presentation

Evisceration Presentation: [ih-vis-uh-rey-shun prez-uhn-tey-shuhn] a radical presentation weight loss program that, though lethal, does indeed improve the appearance of the slides.

Spring has just sprung, and many individuals are sporting the extra poundage of a lethargic winter. Unfortunately, this isn’t the Victorian era, and portliness is no longer a sign of good breeding and business competence. Whether sincere or not, we’re all “losing weight”, or trying at least, so most will be excited to know that the biggest diet of 2010 will be the Evisceration Weight Loss Program.

After all, did you know that two kidneys weigh on average ½ pound? You only need one! Did you know that a liver weighs an average of 4.5 pounds? We haven’t even addressed the stomach, intestines, or other organs yet, and you’re already halfway to your yearly goal.

The FDA does oblige that we mention one small caveat to the Evisceration Weight Loss Program, which is this minor detail: you die. But, unlike those “fad” diets that you’ve been trying year in and year out, you are guaranteed to keep the weight off after completing the program. Can you really put a price on that?

Remarkably, this program has great crossover appeal in the presentation world, too. It just goes to show you that a good idea is a good idea, no matter the playing field. Removing all that pesky content really frees up the speaker to focus on hilarity, beauty, and symmetry in the presentation. For years, people have been complaining about facts and figures getting in the way of elaborate design. No more! The Evisceration Presentation wisely abandons the unsightly blemishes of data and information, wooing audiences with a kaleidoscopic progression of slides sure to make their hearts sing.

The Takeaway: It’s not an art show. Good design and storytelling are great communication aids, but don’t forget they are just that: aids. Start your presentation preparation with solid, meaningful content, and then use your aids to make it fly.
