Why Good Design Isn’t Cheap Design

It’s tempting to turn to a sea of $5.00 promises when you want to create a logo, buy a template, or develop an infographic. Why use a professional when there are plenty of amateurs out there willing to create something fast? If you tell this to any of the designers at Ethos3, a look of horror creeps across their face.

Good design isn’t cheap design, whether it’s in the realm of presentations or otherwise. You know the difference between a fine steak dinner at an expensive restaurant and a tub of small hamburgers from White Castle. So why do so many people feel like fast food prices will buy high-quality design?

Here’s what we mean.

Experience

Why Good Design Isn’t Cheap Design

There is a difference between the paid professional and the hobbyist amateur. A professional has the knowledge of design trends, design functionality, and past experience to work from. They live off what they do because clients have been satisfied with them, and continue to seek design from them. By definition, the amateur is a wild card. Amateurs can’t be vouched for; pros can.

Non-Standard Elements

Building on the notion of a professional’s experience, they can also provide design software and elements that you can’t achieve with a little Googling. Custom fonts, photo manipulation software, and high-quality stock images are all part of the non-standard toolkit that professionals bring to each project. If someone builds a project for $5.00, they make a profit using tools and resources that are less than $5.00 or free. You can expect the same quality of work that you could perhaps achieve yourself with the same downloadable tools.

Process

Internally, our process is what sets Ethos3 apart from other agencies or “bargain” designers. We have a process that creates a fully collaborate, fully invested team effort. From a kickoff call to moodboards, pitches, and rounds of revisions, the client can be assured that the end result will make them happy. Our reputation is on the line. Can a $5.00 designer say as much? The same is true with other design firms; the guarantee of customer service means that your designer won’t vanish, never answer their phone, or ignore feedback. Sometimes beautiful design is a lot more than the way the finished product looks; it involves each of the crucial steps along the way.

A gorgeous finished product isn’t cheap. It’s the result of expensive design software, a team’s complete effort, and the price of past experience from a pro. You are buying more than clip art and Times New Roman; when you purchase a logo or a full presentation, it needs to be a thoughtful reflection of the message you want to convey. Can a few dollars do that?
