The Academy Awards are quickly approaching. A night where the power of story is displayed, appreciated, and recognized. Stories have always served a varied purpose throughout human existence. Stories are a way for individuals to provide meaning to circumstance – even where there may be none. Nearly three-fourths of our daily conversations are rooted in the exchange of social information. Recently, I watched the Academy Award nominated film, Hacksaw + Ridge. According to myself, Mel Gibson is a phenomenal director. But above all else, I am of the opinion that he is an expert storyteller. This belief sparked my interest. Which presentation personas are the most natural of storytellers? Let’s find out.
Performer
Those who score as Performers among all the other presentation personas have the strongest on-stage personalities. While their stories may not be well-researched, or even well-rehearsed for that matter, they will have a grand time telling them.
Activator
You can expect an Activator to deliver a story that packs a punch. As leaders of meaningful discussions, Activators will pull at your heart strings or effectively inspire and motivate you to achieve a particular goal.
Demonstrator
A Demonstrator will likely utilize product or service demos or client and customer experience stories throughout their presentation to make on-stage connections with their audience. They are fiercely in tune with the needs of their audience and will go out of their way to meet them.
Producer
If you are in the room with a Producer, you’ll know it. Their bold personality will shine through as they impress you with their credibility and skill. The types of stories a Producer tells range from company origin narratives – how their company was found or how their product was created – to messages in the form of video or animated illustrations.
Educator
Educator presentation personas will remind you of your favorite teacher when you were growing up. These presenters will know how to string words together in just the right manner to have the strongest impact on their listeners. They’ll be equal parts encouraging and informational. One slide may include an inspirational quote, while the other may have a chart, graph, or important data point highlighted.
Liberator
Any story a Liberator tells will absolutely be remembered by an audience. Adept at delivering a durable message, the Liberator complements their presentation style further by researching comprehensively and eliciting positive responses from others. Of all 16 of the presentation personas, this one exhibits the most well-rounded approach.
Creator
Presentation personas like the Creator may not have the most evidence-based message, but he or she will be intensely passionate about whatever they are saying. The stories they relay will be more like conversations than lectures – a breath of fresh air for audiences.
Captivator
While all of the presentation personas featured in this article are natural storytellers, the Captivator is the obvious storytelling specialist. He or she walks around with a natural charm that is only exacerbated within a presentation environment. Their stories will be highly personal and will flow seamlessly throughout their presentation message.
So, what do all of these presentation personas have in common? Each one of them received a high score in the second quadrant of Badge – Sharing. At the core of this quadrant is a test of your ability to share and deliver your message. It covers qualities including charisma, confidence, humor, and authenticity. The Sharing quadrant is all about you on stage. Are you confident, or a bit awkward? Are you conversational and comfortable or timid and reserved?
